Remember this is your opportunity to be creative, so use description, metaphor, simile - and HAVE FUN with your creation (Dante certainly did).

Leaving Hell

I didn't really understand how exactly Dante and Virgil leave hell. I know that they climb down the devil's back into the ice but I don't really get what happens when Virgil turns his head to where his feet where and leads to there exit. Can anyone explain what happens?

This photo confuses me because there are angels in it. I mean, it is terrible that Ugolino and his four sons had to die the way they did, but he did plot treason against his country. So the point of putting angels in this seems very redundant to me.

We were talking about how people train St. Bernards to find people in the snow and give them the brandy they carry around their neck. I was watching Myth Busters today, and they busted the myth that drinking alcohol in the cold will actually warm you up. Drinking alcohol only make you feel warmer on the outside, but actually lowers your core body temperature significantly, which is bad when you re cold.

It shocks me how people can just go along with cults when there are extreme rules to follow; like death, no communication, and even having to wear uniforms. It is also hard to believe that these leaders can be so deceiving. The followers really do believe that they are doing this for something and in the end their leader murders them. It is not like these people are dying 1 by one, they are dying in hundreds without people knowing. This cult has had 3 massacres where 300 people have died. A church was set on fire with people and children in them. Many were left dead. It gives me chills to even think that someone would do that. Also, they aren’t allowed to communicate. Their only way of communication is throw sign language. Most people lost contact with their families. I couldn’t imagine that happening to me. I get homesick easily and not being able to see my family ever is almost impossible.

I am utterly shocked that the leaders of the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments could comment such atrocities. I am baffled that the human race is capable of such terrible acts. I feel confusion concerning the victims/followers. I believe they must have had little options in life and the few benefits the Movement offered (2 meals a day, schooling for children) must have seemed worth giving away all of their money and possessions. I believe this reflects the inadequacy of the government of Uganda and the indifference of the world concerning the poor of Uganda and elsewhere. I am sickened by the fact that these leaders would kill innocent people, including children. This event exposes a dark element of organized religion: how easy it is for people with ill intentions to take advantage of people who seek help. Furthermore, I am upset at how poorly the investigations were handled. I believe leaders of Uganda handled the situation quite badly. Though I understand they had little resources to conduct a thorough and adequate investigation, I think they could have made efforts to attain help from other countries…perhaps they tried but were unable to attain assistance. It is atrocious that the people of Uganda were forced to uncover the remains of the followers without the specific attire needed to handle decomposed bodies. I found it disturbing that there was not a proper ceremony to honor the victims and that instead some of the remains were buried in pits together. This event reveals a truly sick side of human nature. I believe the leaders of The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments were truly evil

A member of a group linked to the Ku Klux Klan has been charged with murder following the death of an Oklahoma woman who was recruited via the internet, but subsequently tried to leave an initiation ceremony.

Police in Louisiana arrested the man, Raymond "Chuck" Foster, 44, and charged him with second-degree murder after finding the unidentified woman's body in a remote area 60 miles north of New Orleans. Seven accomplices were arrested, five of them on charges of obstruction of justice.

According to the St Tammany parish sheriff's department, the woman was shot in the head after saying she wanted to leave the ceremony. She had responded to a website asking for new recruits to the Dixie Brotherhood, also known as the Sons of Dixie, a previously unknown group.

The woman travelled from Oklahoma to Louisiana to meet the group. Her aim was to return to Oklahoma to recruit new members, police said. After several rituals, including a head-shaving, the woman went with eight others to a remote sand-bar campsite.

The initiation ceremony, a police spokesman said, principally involved lighting torches and "running around in the woods".

But at some point the woman decided she wanted to leave, leading to an argument with Foster, during which he pushed her down and shot her with a .40-caliber handgun, police said.

Members of the group set fire to the woman's belongings before dumping her body under brush several miles away.

However, authorities were alerted after Foster's son and another member of the group went to a supermarket in the town of Bogalusa and asked how they could remove bloodstains from their clothes. The shop assistant recognised them and called police, who went to the scene and found five members of the group in the woods.

"The IQ level of this group is not impressive, to be kind," Sheriff Jack Strain told a news conference, adding, "I can't imagine anyone feeling endangered or at risk by any one of these kooks."

Weapons, Ku Klux Klan flags, five white Klan uniforms and a black "imperial wizard" uniform were found at the campsite.

At the end of the trailer for 2012 it leaves the instructions for everyone to google search that year. Well, when I did this, I came across a lot of really crazy links and websites, and here is one of the google images that came up. You will notice the mayan doomsday calendar at the bottom, a beam of light descending from a space ship of extraterrestials. I think this beam of light is meant to be the solar allignment that has been predicted consistently throughout the ages.

I thought it was strange how the cult began as a peaceful cult, building schools and churches for the community , but it's still odd how the members could only use sign language to commnunicate and families were torn apart. It is not surprising that the poor and the ignorant were the main members of the movement because they did not understand the true motivations of the sect. The leaders took the money by making the member sell all their belongings. The leaders murdered their followers and buried them in mass graves; it was surprising that none of the nieghbors realized what was going on.

It is sad how these people of Uganda believed these views. These mass suicides was just outrages, People would killed themselves in order to follow their beliefs. On March 17, in a small village in Uganda, there was a mass suicide cite; the people set a church on fire with themselves in it. The leader of the cult was part of the Roman Catholic Church before he started his tyrant. He was then expelled from the church. In order to hide his cult’s secret things, there were fences around the buildings they stayed in. Due to the fences, no one knew of what was going on inside of the cult. The people who belonged in the Doomsday cult, had two meals a day, no sex, could not use soap, could not speak in war uniforms, green for the followers, black for the leaders, followers had to handover all their belongings to the leader. It is terrible that the people of Uganda had to see their people go through this torture. It seemed like the Uganda Police did not even care. They took care of the dead bodies carelessly and the people of Uganda did not like the way they handle things. Since there was little money the people of Uganda can not research the death of the followers of the Doomsday cult.

In Uganda, there was a cult discovered murdering hundreds of its members. Throughout the years, the cult gathered many followers. Around six hundred of these members were murdered. This church group known as the Doomsday Cult murdered hundreds of people including men, women, children, and even infants. The group leaders lived in houses with fences and trees surrounding it. This way, no one could see what they were doing. Neighbors were shocked to find out that there were hundreds of bodies buried within feet of their homes. The followers were given specific rules. They wore certain clothes and had to give away their belongings to the leaders. They were only allowed to speak in sign language.  They are unsure why these victims were murdered. The people of Uganda were not happy with the way the police handled these scandals. They had regular people digging for the dead bodies who were not protected and could be destroying evidence. They also did not do anything about the way these victims were thrown in a hole on top of each other, which is disrespectful to the other people of Uganda. The followers were murdered in different ways. Some follower’s bodies were burned and their bones were found blackened, from the fires. Others were murdered in other ways. Uganda does not have enough money to investigate the cult. There is not enough money to research the deaths of hundreds of people.

Everything that I read about the cult in Uganda, like in the video, said the reason the leader killed all of those people was because they began to question his methods and his false prophesies. He took all of their money and their property, and they began to wonder where all of their money was spent. He said the world would end with the beginning of the millennium, and that did not end up happening so they began to wonder if he was a good leader. Whatever the causes were for the murders of these people, one question of mine remains: How did a few religious leaders kill hundreds of followers without any signs of struggle or without anyone hearing cries for help? This question makes the circumstances of this event all the more eerie to me.

It saddens me that the poor people were taken advantage of by the evil leaders in Uganda. People in these cults are seeking a sense of belonging so they turn to anything. In Uganda specifically, these cult followers had to live in a common home, give up all their belongings, refrain from sexual intercourse, eat two meals a day, and wear uniforms. This harsh treatment allowed leaders to maintain control of their followers while their followers to somehow feel as if they were a part of a great group. The “mass suicides” were actually murders conducted by the leaders of the Ugandan cult. Their freedoms were taken away and it shocks me that the people were not outraged with all the rights they were ordered to surrender. This should have been a pin point as to the direction of the cuts future. It is depressing to think that this kind of cult activity will not end even with such an outrageous stunt, but it will continue to capture the minds of those who long to conform to a new and different religion or group of their native land.

You never would figure that people could be ignorant and allow themselves to be taken advantage of so greatly and be put to such shame. I understand that the people of Uganda were seeking some sort of hope and support due to their economic downfall, but not that desperate. Being asked to give all of the money or valuables you have to someone should have been the first red flag for the people of Uganda. In addition, being forced to use sign language and forced to wear uniforms should have been other signs of danger. They were treated as slaves and each one's individuality was taken away from them. No matter how desperate they might have been, I do not understand how people could have been so ignorant. 

Uganda Doomsday Cult Response

That video was pretty shocking. It's crazy how someone who was expelled from the Catholic Church can gain so much power as a religious leader. I have to admit, as insane as the guy must have been, he planned everything pretty well. His ideas to make the followers speak in sign language and to keep the community fenced off were pretty effective. I'm still a little confused about what the leader was really trying to accomplish. To think that he killed hundreds of people for some money is pretty messed up, but from what I can tell I guess most cult leaders are pretty crazy. It just blows my mind to think how one man can gain the full support of that many people. So much support that the followers give all their possessions up for the cult. Hopefully this terrible tragedy will be a warning to others around the globe that are thinking of joining cult-like groups, or think that they are witnessing one develop.

I thought the video was pretty interesting. Even though they used sign language, I dont understand how people didn't see what was going on. I don't believe that it had to do with religion, otherwise the people wouldn't have followed a man that got expelled from the church. This kind of reminds of Behind Enemy Lines because they both have mass murderings that go unnoticed.

I think that this video was interesting, and i find it appalling and astounding at the same time. How could no one notice what was going on here? And i do not see how no one found  way to leave or get people to notice what was going on. I guess the hardships went unknown because of the secretive nature( sign language etc.) I would like to learn more about this and hope someone posts something about it soon.

It is interesting that someone who was expelled from the Church would gain followers in his Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments. It is apparent that his cult was not really about religion but about having money and power. I think it is interesting that he thought about making rules about silence and sign language because it was an effective way to keep outsiders from hearing the pain and suffering of the followers. I think he probably got that idea, also, because his brother was deaf. The man in the video was probably right that the leaders could not hold up the lies they were telling their followers anymore after the followers witnessed such horrible killings.

It is hard to believe that trees and fences hid what was going on and the slaughtering of people. I don't know if anyone watches this show, but it's pretty great. This show Supernatural is about demons and folklore monsters. I just think it's relevant because we are learning about stuff like this. In this show, the sinners go to hell and sometimes their souls come back and possess human bodies. The main character's brother made a deal with a demon and went to hell, and an angel brought him right out of hell because he can stop the apocalypse. Right now a demon is trying to open the gate of hell so Lucifer can come out and bring the apocalypse.

*The narrator opened by stating that Uganda was one of the poorest 24 countries in the world, a fact that likely correlates with the death cults. Since the residents have little to no money, they may seek the death cults as an opportunity for steady money. The same situation usually applies to poor inner-city dwellers as well. Maybe to stop the carnage, we should allow banks to invest in Ugandan businesses; of course, with our current economic status, that might not be possible. Perhaps we should try to overthrow the corrupt warlords?
*What would motivate someone to murder hundreds of innocent people? In war it could be forgiven, but in civilian life it is an incontrovertible sin.

Will The Earth Burn Up In 2012?

There has been much talk of late about the supposed doomsday prediction of December 21, 2012 as reflected in the Mayan long calendar. Most of the ancient Mayan codices were burned by Spanish monks in 1521 as works of the devil. A few survived including the so called Dresden Codex. This 74 page codex written on tree bark and apparently from the famous Mayan temple and observatory at Chichen Itza was sent by Cortes to Emperor Charles V in 1519. Somehow it found its way to the Royal Library at the Court of Saxony in Dresden where it was purchased from a private collector by Johann Christian Goetze. While it was damaged by the fire bombing of Dresden during WWII, much has survived.

From this work, which was written between 1200 and 1250 AD, numerous astronomical and calendar data points were found including information on eclipses, the transit of the planet Venus as well as information on the motion of the moon, stars and the sun. It has been determined by research scholars that the Mayan long count calendar ends on 13.0.0.0.0 which equates to our date of December 21, 2012 at 10AM GMT. On that day it has been surmised the end will come.

According to my research, many have tried to tie this upcoming apocalyptic winter solstice day with a solar shift, solar storms, and a transit of Venus as well as with severe earthquakes. Is there any truth to these allegations? According to some astronomers, on this day our solar system will intersect with the Galactic Equator which only happens every 26,000 years. Since the Mayan calendar began in 3114 BC, they had never experienced anything like this before. The Mayans called this event the Sacred Tree. This alignment with the center of the galaxy also allows for maximum mass and thus maximum gravity.

According to the National Earthquake Information Service of the US Geological Survey, earthquakes have gradually increased from 1 severe quake between 1890 and 1899 to 765 from 2000-2004. Could this be due to our solar systems movement towards this Galactic Equator?

NASA predicts that a terrific solar storm will hit the earth in 2012 which will be 30-50 percent greater than anything before it. I believe that there has been global warming over the past decades but it is related to sunspot activity on the sun not carbon dioxide emissions. The sun has gotten hotter and that has affected the earth. A massive solar blast from the sun in 2012 could burn up the earth as could a collision with an asteroid or a comet.

There has even been talk of a polar shift which could disrupt the functioning of the entire earth and could change the axis of rotation. Such a shift has taken place in our geologic past and could happen again. If it happened on December, 21, 2012, it would truly be a day to remember.

This apocalyptic date of December 21, 2012 is also supposedly found in Hopi myths, the I-Ching, Aztec writings, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Roman Oracles, writing of Seneca Elders, the chief Shaman of the Cherokee Tribe in NC, and even the writings of Nostradamus, The Russian mathematician Sergey Smelyakov of Khartov University taking the constant Phi (1.6180339), the so called Golden Mean or the Fibonacci sequence, and applying it to solar activity and planetary orbits, found that everything seemed to spiral in on itself on December 21, 2012 implying a time implosion or point of bifurcation.

The planet Venus is set to make a transit across the face of the sun on December 21, 2012 which happens very infrequently. It did happen recently, however, on June 8, 2004 which means it will happen again in eight years which is very unusual but predicted by the Mayans.

I cannot tell you for certain that the earth will be consumed by fire in 2012 or that there will be a polar shift or severe earthquakes, but I can tell you with certainty that one day in the not too distant future it will be consumed by fire and experience a polar shift and severe earthquakes. I can say that because the word of God says so and it did beginning over 2700 years ago, long before the Mayans or the Aztecs or the Hopi or the Seneca or the I-Ching or Nostradamus.

Once before because of its sin the earth was destroyed by water in the Great Flood of Noah's day but the Bible says that the world will be destroyed again, this time by fire.

"The present heavens and earth, by His word, are being reserved for fire, kept for the Day of Judgment and the destruction of ungodly men" (2Peter 3:7).

"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat and the earth and its works will be burned up" (2Peter 3:10).

"The sun scorched men with fire" (Revelation 16:8).

"A third of the earth was burned up and a third of the trees were burned up and all the green grass was burned up. A great mountain (asteroid?) burning with fire was thrown into the sea and a third of the sea became blood and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and a third of the ships were destroyed. And a great star (comet?) fell from heaven burning like a torch and it fell on a third of the rivers and springs of water (Revelation 8:7-11).

"The inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men are left" (Isaiah 24:6).

"The hills melt and the earth is burned up" (Nahum 1:5).

Once again, many have associated December 21, 2012 with a shift in the poles as well as signs in the sky. What does the Bible tell us about these events?

"The stars will fall from the sky" (Matthew 24:29).

If the earth shifts on its axis and we are thrown around, the stars will appear to fall but it will actually be us that are moving.

"The earth is broken asunder. The earth is split through. The earth is shaken violently. Thee earth reels to and fro like a drunkard and it totters like a shack "(Isaiah 24:19-20).

Once again a shift in the polar axis might tear the earth apart.

"There will be great earthquakes. The sun became black like sackcloth; the moon became like blood.The stars of the sky fell to the earth... The sky split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up.every mountain and island moved out of their place' (Revelation 6:12-14).

More shaking of the earth.

"There will be great earthquakes and in various places plagues and famines and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. There will be signs in the sun and the moon and stars and upon the earth great dismay among nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves. Men fainting from fear as the powers of heaven will be shaken" (Luke 21:9, 25-26).

Here we see the Bible tell us about signs in the heavens spoken of in relation to December 21, 2012. But what do we do when we see these things happening?

"When you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you that this generation will not pass away until all things take place.But when these things begin to take place straighten up and lift up your heads because your redemption is drawing near" (Luke 21:31,32, 28).

God assures us that:

"Heaven and earth will pass away but My words shall not pass away" (Matthew 24:35).

Some people ask why God takes so long to punish the ungodly:

"The Lord is not slow about His promise as some count slowness but is patient toward you not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance (2Peter 3:9).

Remember this as the end fast approaches.

Question on Virgil

So if Virgil is supposed to belong in the virtuous pagans area (circle one), why does he have powers that can silence Pultus, Minos, Cerebrus and all those other monsters that reign the circles? Is it because God willed it or something????

So far in Dante I haven't thought that the punishments have been that bad, but then i thought that if you had to do some of these things for eternity it would be terrible, in fact if you had to do anything for eternity it would be terrible. Does anyone agree?
