Metamorph.. response

Did anyone else have the feeling during the first few pages of the story that the story was going to be a parable?

From starting the story in medias res, i got the reaction that waking up as such a fictional character and having such a mediocre life that this would immediately become a parable.

Does it ever say what exactly the bug is that Gregor changes into? It is often portrayed as a cockroach is this actually what it is?

It's interesting that so many people including musicians have actually been influenced by Metamorphosis. The Rolling Stones even had an album called Metamorphosis where on the cover all of their members had the heads of insects.

Themes

Is anyone aware of any major themes in Metamorphosis for study purposes? I know that guilt might be one since he is unable to work and his family brings up money sometimes, but does anyone know any others?
