Could the reason be that in art, figures who lie supine and are there to be seen by the viewer are typically women? Is there a passivity to the attitude of the coffin that implies a female character?

i think that the artist is trying to convey his/her discomfort with death, and the life leaving his/her body(the white cloth falling off the coffin).
It's really cool how the coffin is set up as though the woman were sitting there.
