I thought it was interesting that right after John watches the owl dance, he kills a man and decides to leave owl feathers on his body. These symbolize death.
The book claimed that to the Spokane Indians, the owl generally symbolized death or was a harbinger of it. I wonder what the crow symbolized because of that?
Makenzie made a good point: those costumes look a lot like the grass dancer costume that John imagined in his pretend life. About the owl dancing: I was confused by the concept, is it basically like a ladie's choice dance? and what is with the broom?

with those green costumes it makes me think that these are like the costumes John might have worn as a grass dancer
