Is there any significance to the wasps and flies that are biting the souls of those who are undecided in life when Dante and Virgil are about to cross Acheron into hell?
Stinging insects show up as punishments in some myths from different parts of the world. To me it is a use of a punishment from nature. The punishments in Dante's Hell are seldom man-made torture devices (but note that in Cirlce 7 some of those who are fraudulent against God are punished with knives).
its also very symbolic; they chase a moving banner for all of eternity, just like in life they followed only their goals, which would constantly change depending on what would better serve them. they are then pursued by stinging insects that represent the feeling of guilt constantly stinging these opportunists for their actions. then the maggots and worms represent the moral filth that they fuel with their own mistrust.
