In Southern Italy, there's a volcanic crater lake known as Avernus. In ancient Rome, it was believed to be the entrance to the Underworld, and even appears in Virgil's Aeneid, which is where I got the title from (translates to "The descent to Avernus is easy"). Supposedly, it is through Avernus that Dante descends. Aeneas, the hero from Virgil's story, descends through Hell the same exact way.
