I'm very confused on what Erdich means when she said that she is on one of her "nights."

When she walks down to the room with her clarinet and her music books, she puts something on called an Afghan. I was confused as to what that is so researched it a little bit. This attachment explains a little bit more about it.

By one of her "nights" Erdrich means that Sister Mary Martin is having a bout of insomnia; it seems like this is a pretty common thing for her to experience. Some nights she can't sleep, so gets up and plays her clarinet.
