The Plunge of the Brave (1957)
At the end of The Plunge of the Brave Nector says he sees "Marie standing in the bush. She is 14 years old and slim again" (145). Then, in the last line of the chapter the figure Nector says is Marie calls Nector "Daddy." Could this be Nector and Marie's first daughter that died? Nector describes the figure as an angel, so is she a spirit sent to save Nector from the fire??

In the next chapters you'll find out who this person is. Consider that the person looks like Marie at 14. Who is someone who might look like Marie, be 14 years old, and call Nector, "Daddy"?
I think its one of his daughters. I think it may be Zelda or another one of his kids
Yep, Eleanor is right. I just read "Flesh and Blood" and it's Zelda who is standing in the bush. Zelda's not 14, she's actually 16 but Marie says that she's older in age but not in mind.
I thought the spirit stuff was a good idea, though.
Where exactly does it say that the figure was Zelda?
In "Flesh and Blood" on page 162, second to last paragraph, "I knew that [Zelda] read the letter. She had gone after Nector."
I didn't like how the stories switched around from narrator to narrator at first but I like the way the different stories reveal things just like how they revealed that it was Zelda who went to retrieve Nector.
