I had similar questions, hope someone clarifies.
I'm not quite sure I followed this chapter, either. Marie Lazarre is Albertine's grandmother. So this chapter is about Marie's adolescence and her stint at the convent. I don't understand Marie's desire to become a saint but it probably has something to do with a strict Catholic faith or wanting to be worshipped or something.
I don't know about Marie being possessed by Satan but it seemed to me that Sister Leopolda may have been possessed by the "Dark One" and not Marie.
This was definitely a tricky chapter.
I guess Marie wants to be worshipped as she worships the Dark One herself (since she states that God created only half of everything-correct me if I'm wrong), and ya Sister Leopolda was also possessed by the Dark One but she (Leopolda) can see that Marie is aware of the Dark One too.
At times Marie wants to feel the love from Sister Leopolda but as quoted, she also wants to "have Leopolda's heart roasted on a stick."
So by the end of the chapter, Marie attempts to kick Leopolda into the oven but fails, this causes Leopolda to stab Marie's hands with a fork. The 3 sisters of the convent believes the stab wounds on her hands to be marks of Stigmata. Sister Leopolda did not want to be blamed.
Okay so yea this is what I got out of this chapter when I read it a second time. Hopefully this is right.
im not sure if she was actually possessed either. i think that leonardas will to be pure and saintly made her possibly believe something that wasnt there.. like that thought bubble above Maries head about the dark one.
Yea this chapter was kind of confusing for me too. I didn't get if Leopolda could really sense the Devil or not. And I was a little confused about what happened in the end. What was with Marie's vision of Leopolda eating the glass beneath her feet?
