I'm not completely sure but I noticed that myself. It kind of seems like a way of moving the story along without waisting any time, but I'm not completely posotive.
he faints before moving to each subsequent level, because hell shouln notbe a "physical place, and as such dante should not be able to go from level to level. and to avoid explaining how he does go from one to another, the author has him faint and wake up on the other side. or at least thats what i remember as the explanation
