I agree it was good in some ways because all of the actions and details could be interpreted in so many different ways..but I love audiobooks and this helps alot

after reading the article about her, I feel as if the book is more a biography more then anything.
i agree with kayla because it sounds like Helen Oyeyemi had a pretty rouf childhood. also alot of things that happened to Oyeyemi also happened to Jess in the book.
It seems to me that Oyeyemi needed to work some things out for herself, but once her writing turned from something personal to something others would see, she sort of obscured things that may have been too personal to put out there. This book is sort of tantilizing, as is the possibility of "finding" Oyeyemi in the book - like something you see out of the corner of your eye, but that goes away when you look directly at it.
The key theme in the Icarus girl is loneliness, which causes the human mind to suffer.
Helen Oyeyemi has drawn on her own experience in exploring this emotional terrain. She describes herself as ‘a real mess at school’, isolated from her classmates and regarded as ‘the weird girl’.
i think that the ending of the novel leaves a lot to be desired, but the rest is very well written. i know that i personally wouldn't be able to write an ending to a story that was based on my life. i mean, if the story really is autobiographical, it's probably still unfolding.

i think oyemi really became the main character in her book by living through jess
Devin, great comment. I think you're right about writing "your own ending" if you're writing fiction based on your own life.
i think Helen Oyeyemi's personal life had a major affect on what happens in the novel and how she wrote it, especially at the very end of the book.
