Charles Schmid

I know our English exam is over but I still cannot get the story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" out of my head. I found some information about the man Arnold Friend is based off of. His name is Charles Schmid and was a serial killer known as "The Pied Piper of Tucson". He used padding in his cowboy boots to appear taller, dyed his hair black, and wore make-up to mask his true appearance, just like Arnold. Here is some websites to check out if you are interested in the man behind the mask:
I am kind of confused about how we make our presentation with glogster. Do we make like ten different posters each with ten things and for our songs do we just put a link to it or do we have to write stuff about it explaining how it relates to Native American stuff?

33 19 17

I was researching the title of "Where are you going, where have you been?" and I found an analysis of the story that explains the use of the numbers 33 19 17 and how this relates to the title:

"This code of numbers, 33 19 17, is the most illustrative example of Oates’s use of religion in this story. As Mark Robson points out in “Oates’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?””, this sequence of numbers has biblical significance. Robson points out that counting backwards from the end of the bible yields Judges as the 33rd book, wherein chapter 19 verse 17 reflects the title of the short story itself (Robson 230).

The passage reads “And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?”(Jud 19.17). Furthermore, Robson indicates that if numerical values are assigned to each letter, the book of Genesis is the only book whose letters total 33(Robson 230) which, if combined with the same chapter and verse(19:17) contains a warning from God before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah for over-indulgence.

To point out further intriguing occurrences, using the same numerical valuation system above, Robson indicates that “’Connie’ ads up to 33, while “loves” is 19, and “God” is 17” (Robson 230). Additionally, averaging the values created by applying this system to the words “Arnold” and “friend” yields the number 33. This eerie code sets the stage for what Arnold has in mind."

http://bookstove.com/drama/where-are-you-going-where-have-you-been-by-joyce-carol-oates/

Bob Dylan Connection

I found some informations on why critics think "Where are you Going, Where have you Been?" is dedicated to Bob Dylan. I thought what they came up with made sense with the story and was pretty interesting. Here it is:
They see Arnold as a savior or messiah figure and base their case on identifying Arnold with Bob Dylan, the popular singer to whom Oates dedicated the story. In the mid-sixties Bob Dylan's followers perceived him to be a messiah. According to his biographer [Anthony Scaduto], Dylan was a "rock-and-roll king." It is no wonder then that Arnold speaks with "the voice of the man on the radio," the disc jockey whose name, Bobby King, is a reference to "Bobby" Dylan, the "king" of rock-and-roll. Dylan was more than a "friend" to his listeners; he was "Christ revisited," "the prophet leading [his followers] into [a new] Consciousness." In fact, "people were making him an idol; . . . thousands of men and women, young and old, felt their lives entwined with his because they saw him as a mystic, a messiah who would lead them to salvation."

"Where are you Going? Where have you Been?": 15. How is this story a parable? What is the lesson or meaning you find in the story?

One of you answered: Things are not always what they seem. The one thing she prided herself on ended up getting her into a bad situation.
another answered: 15. The story teaches an important valuable lesson. The lesson is to never trust strangers and to not get too fascinated with the contemporary teenage lifestyle.

What did you conclude the meaning was?

Jeff Jordan: A Modern Surrealist Artist

When most people think of Surrealism, they think of Dali and Magritte, but there are plenty of examples of present day surrealist painters. One of my favorites is Jeff Jordan.

This painting is called Big Mutant:

Part of the purpose of surrealism is to parody reality. Above is a picture of one of his paintings. Obviously, it's very strange and interesting, and doesn't make much sense. Try to interpret the picture above, and think about what it could mean. Think about how much your interpretation changes when I give you this picture:

So, then, what does the Big Mutant represent? War? Peace? God? This is part of the reason why Surrealism is so great, there's not one correct answer. Some may be better and deeper than others, sure, but it's all subjective.

His Website. He has a gallery of paintings, they're interesting.

Metamorph.. response

Did anyone else have the feeling during the first few pages of the story that the story was going to be a parable?

Metamorphosis

I found a neat-o quiz which tells you which character you are in Kafka's Metamorphosis.

http://www.nd.edu/~ljordan/metamorphosis/

Last Tuesday

I missed class last Tuesday and was wondering what we did and if any notes were taken, and if so what were they.

Metamorphosis

I found a pretty cool image that was inspired by Kafka's metamorphosis
It's interesting that so many people including musicians have actually been influenced by Metamorphosis. The Rolling Stones even had an album called Metamorphosis where on the cover all of their members had the heads of insects.

Themes

Is anyone aware of any major themes in Metamorphosis for study purposes? I know that guilt might be one since he is unable to work and his family brings up money sometimes, but does anyone know any others?

Kafka

Do we have to read all of Kafka's Metamorphosis?

Kafka

I was doing some research and found that there are several different films related to Kafka.

-In 1987 Jim Goddard filmed Metamorphosis, a version for TV starring Tim Roth as Gregor Samsa, based on Steven Berkoff's stage adaption.
-In 1993 Carlos Atanes directed The Metamorphosis of Franz Kafka, a controversial adaptation based on The Metamorphosis as well on biographical details from Kafka's family.
-In 2007 filmmaker Ari Mark adapted the story into a 13 minute version in which main character Stanley Leiber awakens with a sharp pain in his skull and discovers that he has been profoundly transformed during the night.
-Limor Diamante wrote and will direct Metamorphosis, which weaves together the celebrated tale of a man who transforms into a giant bug with a parallel account of Kafka's heartbreaking writing process.
-In 2009 an experimental film tells the story entirely from Gregor’s subjective point of view with the help of a unique special spherical camera system

Sources

I know Ms. Deckard put it on the board today, but how do you cite the play in the paper?

iago

according to wikipedia the charachter idea of the character iago comes from ........ "The character's source is traced to Giovanni Battista Giraldi Cinthio's tale "Un Capitano Moro" in Gli Hecatommithi (1565). There, the character is simply "the ensign." Iago is a soldier and Othello's ancient (ensign or standard bearer)"

Do you think Othello's rashness in his decision making would have led to their seperation eventually, or do you think they would have lived happily ever after as they did before Iago arrived?

QUICK QUESTION!

when was this play first put on/ and why are cloven feet important??

A few Othello Quotes

Iago to Roderigo: "put money in thy purse"
"thick lips" is a racial slur referring to Othello
Iago to Othello: "Beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is a green-eyed monster"
Iago: "This is the night that either makes me or fordoes me quite"
Othello, talking about Desdemona, "she loved me for the danger I had passed"
Here is an interesting painting I found of Othello. It was painted by David G. Wilson

Othello now on BROADWAY!

John Ortiz & Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Othello"
Complete casting has been announced for the forthcoming production of Othello starring John Ortiz in the title role and Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman as Iago. A joint production of the Public Theater and LAByrinth Theater Company, the play will have a limited engagement of 23 performances, beginning September 12 at the NYU Skirball Center, directed by Peter Sellars.

Joining Ortiz and Hoffman will be Julian Acosta (Penalties and Interest) as Roderigo, Gaius Charles (TV’s Friday Night Lights) as Duke/Lodovico, Jessica Chastain (Rodney’s Wife) as Desdemona, Liza Colon-Zayas (The Little Flower of East Orange) as Emilia; Saidah Arrika Ekulona (Ruined as Montano/Bianca and LeRoy McClain (The Good Negro) as Cassio.

Sellars, an internationally known opera director, will stage a “contemporary production” of Othello, according to a news release. The staging “explores the new prospects for hope in 21st-century America, giving the play a modern resonance that raises a mirror to our culture’s racial struggles and achievements, both darkened and illuminated by overwhelming personal and political yearning.”

Othello will feature scenic design by Gregor Halzinger, costume design by Mimi O’Donnell, lighting design by James F. Ingalls and original music and sound design by Mark Grey.

The play is being presented in association with Wiener Festwochen, Vienna, and Schauspielhaus Bochum and by special arrangement with NYU Skirball Center.

Did Ms. Deckard mention what the format of the Othello test will be, or anything important that we need to know for the test?

Affair

This might be a dumb question. Did Desdemona actually have an affair with Cassio, or is that just what Othello thought? I know in the end of the movie they said she was innocent, but was she really?

Alrighty, so I'm not trying to ask a dumb question, I'm just wondering. What exactly is it about Othello,( since he is the only black character) that makes him so powerful in the play? I don't understand where he comes from and how he demands such respect... a wealthy family.. some different background.. what?

the name Othello

When researching Othello I found these interesting facts about the name.

The name Othello means "wealth" in Old German. The Spanish descent means "prosperous."
One in every 702, 302 Americans are named Othello.
It can be estimated that as of 2009 there are 439 people named Othello in the United States.
It is more common to be a first name rather than a middle or last name.

Iago

Does anyone know what is Iago's motive for being the biggest jerk ever? Is it just because he wants the military position that that othello probably wont give to him, especially if he finds out that Iago is a two-faced liar?

I feel like this topic has a lot of parallels to masks and reputation and i found these quotes interesting

There is an objective reality out there, but we view it through the spectacles of our beliefs, attitudes, and values. ~David G. Myers,

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination. ~John Lennon

To treat your facts with imagination is one thing, but to imagine your facts is another. ~John Burroughs

Hm... Hurricane!?!

Hmm.. Hurricane? I just read a little bit about it, and they said we shouldn't worry. It was first a category 1 then increased to a category 2; however, it is supposed to weaken to a tropical storm as it moves north. So, hopefully it will just stay like that. /= I haven't even heard about any of this until today, guess it's not that big of a deal. Anyway, peace.
There was an Othello movie made in 1995 with Laurence Fishburne and also one called "O" made in 2001. That one was set in modern times in a high school. It sounds interesting! We should definitely watch one of them in class!

Oni Masks

The oni is the demon of japanese folklore. It takes on many other names, sometimes referred to as a devil. Unlike most western cultures, the oni is not necessarily seen as an evil being. It is said to be of a dual nature, meaning it's powers can be good or evil, depending on if it likes the subject it attaches itself too. Oni are credited with with bringing good health, safety, peace and avoiding disaster. A typical oni mask has horns, bulging eyes, a sinister looking smile and sharp teeth. Sometimes, it is shown in a form that looks more like a skull. This represents a very black and white image of transition. A representation that good is leaning toward evil, or that evil is trying to become good. Often, oni masks will have hair. If one could break away from the traditional impression that the demon is an instrument of evil, it would make the oni a more widely accepted good luck symbol.

facebook mask quiz

There is a quiz on Facebook called "What mask do you wear?"
I took it and here was my result: Your mask is Beauty. You are beautiful inside and out. You aren't too aware of your beauty, although all the people around you are. There are times when you feel like you're wearing a mask, but no one around you can notice the difference with or without it. You may feel vulnerable at times, but you usually get through it. You sometimes wish you had someone to help you through those tough times, but you are always hopeful and don't give up easily. People who first meet you notice your beauty at a glance, but most people notice it when they get to really know you.

A Good Book About Appearance vs. Reality

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel by the Irish poet and author Oscar Wilde written in the last decade of the 19th century.

I don't want to say too much about it, since it's very easy to spoil, but Appearance vs. Reality plays a huge role in the story. It's very slow at first, since the main twist of the story isn't even acknowledged until the first third of the book, but it gets really good towards the end. The book isn't that long, either. I think it's only about 200 pages long. I read pretty much the whole thing while on a plane.

The Wikipedia page has a decent description of the book, saying, "The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Talking in Basil's garden, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian cries out, expressing his desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging."

Don't read much more of the Wikipedia page if you're interested in the book, since the plot summary contains huge spoilers, but I recommend it to anyone interested in the topic. And, having read it, talking about masks constantly remind me of Dorian.

You can also get a little idea of what might be contained in the novel by looking at Mr. Wilde's scandalous Wikipedia page. Link to Oscar Wilde's Wikipedia page.

Enjoy.

Mask Quotes

Here are some more quotes about masks that I found.

All great things must first wear terrifying and monstrous masks in order to inscribe themselves on the hearts of humanity.” -- Friedrich Nietzsche

The countenances of children, like those of animals, are masks, not faces, for they have not yet developed a significant profile of their own.” -- W. H. Auden

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” -- Oscar Wilde

"No mask like open truth to cover lies, As to go naked is the best disguise." --William Congreve

The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. ...You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask.” --Jim Morrison

Here is a website with good pictures of what it is and how to make it.

Scientology convicted of Fraud in France

This is an interesting article.

I know some of you are interested in the topic of Scientology, what it is, what it preaches, and if it is a "cult" or not. This article is about a trial in France that ended today with a conviction of Fraud against the Church and 6 people who run the church in France. So the church itself was convicted of fraud. Each person named in the trial was fined over $500,000 US dollars. The article is short.

Essay

I was wondering if since most people didn't get to the essay if maybe you could give us a new one in class tomorrow.

Does Anyone...

... have the sheet on the creative writing paper we have to do? or where to find it, i have no idea where to get it and it might help for the pre write. Thanks!

Geryon

Ms. Deckard, when are we going to finish our monsters? Anyway here is an interesting drawing of Geryon.

You need to strive to do your best at all times

Mediocre efforts and mediocre choices lead to mediocre (or lower) results. In today's world, you can't coast - you need to work harder than other people out there to get ahead, to get into college, and later to get a job. Just getting by isn't enough in today's world.

Does anyone know some possible ID's from circles 8 and 9 that could show up on the test tomorrow?

Mrs. Deckard!

I'd love to make my two posts, and receive my credit for blogging, however, I was only in classes for 2 days last week(Tuesday & Friday), so anything I could possibly attempt to say would not be coherent to anything we're talking about in the least. Could I please come talk to you about what to do during/after school tomorrow?

Help!

OKAY, so I've been sitting here forever trying to figure out how to do number 6 on the Web Activity for Circle 9. I can't seem to get a specific answer or make a certain map. I've tried many different things, so if anyone can explain it thoroughly, but simply at the same time, please let me know! Thanks.

DANTE STUDY GUIDE WEBZITE

While searching the web i found this sweet site that outlines all the different circles in one paragraph. Hopefully this can help y'all study and give a good impression of what Dante pictured hell to be like.

Info on Brutus and Cassius and Caesar's Assassination in General

Brutus and Cassius both appear in the mouth of Satan, so I thought I'd give a little input as to who they are and why they have such a punishment.

Brutus and Cassius were somewhat related; Cassius was the brother in-law of Brutus. Also, they were both key conspirators in the assassination of Julius Caesar. Cassius was in a way the mind behind the operation, but Brutus was the leader.

Read more about the assassination itself here.

After Caesar was assassinated, Brutus claimed that the Romans were free once again. However, this is pretty ironic, since immediately afterwards, Rome was thrown into discord and civil wars, ultimately ending with Octavian, with great help from Agrippa, rising out victoriously and taking power, after a quick name change. He became known as Emperor Augustus.

Not only did Cassius and Brutus assassinate the man who united Rome (which Caesar did), they also were the catalysts of the creation of the Roman Empire. It's pretty ironic that they killed Caesar because they believed he was becoming too much of a dictator. And Caesar was sworn in as Dictator for life, but he was given that by the people. Don't let the title fool you, he was in no way like Trujillo, his conquests strengthened Rome and even the Roman people, as Caesar gave them pride in their country. And Caesar was a military genius anyway. Killing him seems a bit unreasonable.

It makes sense that Brutus and Cassius are in the deepest part of Hell. Not only are they traitors to their leader and country, but they're also idiots. They tried to take power themselves after the assassination, but Marc Antony, a man in high power, and Octavian were too awesome for Brutus and Cassius, so they were defeated. And, like any failed tyrant, they killed themselves. Then Marc Antony, who wanted Rome himself, despite Octavian being named as sole heir, married Cleopatra and planned to use the Egyptian army to conquer Rome. Octavian, who was 19 when Caesar was assassinated, gave direct military control to Agrippa, who was the same age as Octavian. Antony and Cleopatra tried to take control of Rome, but Agrippa and Octavian were too awesome for them, so they were defeated at the Battle of Actium. And, like any failed tyrant, they killed themselves. Octavian gained Imperial power, established the Roman Empire, and, after such a harsh war, Rome was brought to a time of peace.

Brutus and Cassius pretty much failed miserably. They killed a beloved leader, caused a civil war, then ultimately caused the creation of the Roman Empire. Romans sure were free.

Snowball

I found some information about the snowball fight we talked about briefly in class today. It says that the whole scenario began in Pistoia, which is a few miles from Florence. It explains how Focaccia, member of the Cancellieri family, kills his Uncle and cuts off the hands of his cousin. He did this because he was chastised by his Uncle for throwing a snowball. A feud developed among the Guelphs and it caused the immergence of two parties: Neri (blacks), and Bianchi (whites). This website I've posted has a lot more information on Dante and many other things about the two groups. Check it out if you're are interested. http://www.dantealighieri.net/cambridge/guelphs.html

seven

i think that we should consider watching the movie "seven", as it is a great movie and really helps to remember the seven deadly sins.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

What other times is the number seven symbolic. Other then the 7 liberal arts?

7 Deadly Sins concept

The circles of hell in Dante's Inferno have much to do with the seven deadly sins and we went over them all in class. Here, a artist/designer made wine glasses inspired by the sins. I just thought that it was kind of interesting. If you really look at the designs, they make sense according to the sins they are named after.

For the test will we need to know anything on the 9 traits of an epic poem, or what makes a hero or the 7 liberal arts?

More infor on Jonestown

Hey guys, I found a website on Jonestown. It relates the information and "reasoning" per say of this cult, and why the people wanted what they did. They were easily drawn into things and were followers in many ways. They figured that this Utopian style life was better in every way possible for them and the rest of their community. This website draws in links from the cold war to help you to understand people's mind sets in Jonestown and what their culture was actively like. http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~reli291/Jonestown/Jonestown.html

Cults and Circle 6

Well, it certainly is disappointing to me that 6th period didn't manage to get the cult video going. When you read this weekend, you will see that Circle 6 is full of heretics, those who denied the teachings of the church. It is also full of cultists, those who followed a path other than that proscribed by the Catholic church. Cults are a very relevant topic for us today, as there are hundreds of cults operating world-wide, many of which are in the news over and over again as a result of their beliefs, leaders, and, unfortunately, tragic deaths in some cases. Over the long weekend, in addition to reading the cantos that are assigned, go to the Bulletin Board part of the HW site and link to the youtube videos I've posted. Watch these videos on the Ugandan Death Cult, Jonestown and the People's Temple, and Heaven's Gate. Take notes on what you watch and hand it in on Tuesday. See you soon!

This is probably a good website to look over real quick before the test, just as a quick review. Oh, and the website is good, it's edu. http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/eng251/dante.html#tour

Wiki Article about Acheron River

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acheron

MY BED!

I found the artist that made "My Bed", it's Tracey Emin. She and Billy Childish formed the new art movement stuckism, which states that once an artist becomes stuck they should return to painting and traditional art, and not drift toward conceptual art. Her previous art isn't that great, but you can decide what you think about it. To find her work just google her name.

Dante's Inferno (2007 Movie)

A while back, I was introduced to a version of Dante's Inferno that satirized modern day society (i.e. McDonald's arches in Hell). I did some searching, and found that it was done by someone named Sandow Birk. Not only did he translate the Inferno, he also adapted the classic illustrations done by Gustave Dore. I couldn't find much more information than that, but what I did find was that the same guy made a movie.

666

We never talked about this in class so i did some research my self and found that 666 is the number of the beast and it comes from a concept in the book of revelations from the new testament. Some scholars think that this number could also be the number of the Roman emperor Nero, and he was known for being very tyrannical and he had numerous people executed.

Dante's Inferno

Is there any significance to the wasps and flies that are biting the souls of those who are undecided in life when Dante and Virgil are about to cross Acheron into hell?

Dante's Inferno - Video game

There is a new game that was brought to my attention by my uncle which is basically Dante's adventures in to hell. It is going to be a very violent slasher, and even to log onto the website you have to put in your age as 18 or older. The game will be loosely based on the poem, but still would be really cool to play after reading it in english.

college essays- Ms. Deckard

Hey Ms. Deckard, if we have short answers for our college essays (about 100 words or so), can we write those and also have you look over them for us? I was just wondering, because that's what I have for my DePaul application.

Dante's Inferno Pic

This is a picture like the one on the bottom of Mrs. Deckard's board, depicting the different levels of hell from Dante's Inferno:
http://starbuckfm.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/dante11.jpg
This is an interesting wiki article about the origins of the number 666:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_the_Beast#Interpretations

Facilis Descenus Averni

In Southern Italy, there's a volcanic crater lake known as Avernus. In ancient Rome, it was believed to be the entrance to the Underworld, and even appears in Virgil's Aeneid, which is where I got the title from (translates to "The descent to Avernus is easy"). Supposedly, it is through Avernus that Dante descends. Aeneas, the hero from Virgil's story, descends through Hell the same exact way.

Cheer Up

If your really nervous about your essay, it could be worse...far worse.

My path to college began in utero, when my mother, who recognized my potential early on, placed headphones on her growing abdomen and played the symphonies of Beethoven. As an infant, I showed a precocious proclivity in mathematics and language arts, and when most of my peers were sticking their fingers in paint I was already reciting certain of Shakespeare’s shorter speeches, with particular emphasis on The Scottish Play and the Dream. My musical talents were no less arresting. I stood out in Music Together class as the only child consistently on beat with my stamping and clapping, and later was told by the teacher of the class that I was uncommonly gifted, and hence eligible for advanced work in rhythmic dance.

Extra Credit for Dante's Inferno

Due NOVEMBER 9th. This gives you one weekend after VooDoo fest.

2 options - you may do both.
1) Read The Dante Club and pitch a project, response, paper, etc. to me. Once its approved, complete the project.

2) Come up with your own creative response to Dante's inferno. Discuss it with me, then create what you invent. Some ideas are: Virgil's diary of the journey, a box set of CD's that go with the descent into hell (liner notes too please & remember that a song isn't necessarily appropriate just because it has the word "hell" in it), a video game (you could propose and story board it), a movie, a painting, a ceramic something, a scrapbook of the trip, a diorama.

Can someone send me notes?

I was gone Thursday and Friday, and I'd really appreciate it if someone sent me notes via STM e-mail. If you want, I'll give you a high five in return.

2012!

I just saw the trailer for 2012 on TV, and I remembered that it related to numerology. This movie is about the world ending in 2012, because that's when the Mayans predicted time would end (the whole thing with the super number). From the trailer, the movie seems kinda hokey but I don't know, we'll have to see. Also, the movie comes out on November 13th, and we all know the significance of 13! I posted a link to the trailer below, enjoy!

Feminist Play?

Ms. Deckard, said that Medea could not be considered a feminist play because the setting is Ancient Greece, meaning they would have no idea what "feminism" actually was. However, one could read it today and take it as a feminist play. Really, it displays warnings for men to control their woman and pick them well. He is warning women to be faithful to their family and not to betray their country.

6 Terms for a Tragedy

For anyone wondering what is going to be on the test, Ms. D said very briefly in class that there were going to be a question or two on how Medea qualifies as a tragedy... or something along those lines. The six things (according to Aristotle) that make a story a tragedy are:

- Plot
- Character
- Language
- Thought
- Melody
- Spectacle

these are in Old Boy too.. which makes that story a tragedy also

Woman Wondering?

In class, Ms Deckard said that it would be weird/suspicious to see medea strolling around town, not only because she is a woman but also because of who she is and how she publically anounced how she was going to poison Creon, Glauce and Jason. But here im really confused... How can Medea be sent on exile outside of Corinth when everyone will look at her funny because she is a wondering woman? Can anyone explain? Is the laws that we talked about in class just for Greece does the laws/feelings about woman's rights pertain to all of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea?

Movie

Could someone summarize what happens in the end of the movie... I missed it today because of a meeting.
I definitely saw how the movie was related to Oedipus because of what he does to himself in the end and about the relationship between father and daughter. I thought the movie itself was a little weird though.

Does anyone know the test format for tomorrow? Is it the same as the Oedipus test?

OLDBOY!!

Old Boy is amazing! This movie is really well done, and the sequences are really nicely made. I'm glad Robert found this movie, because I probably wouldn't have seen it otherwise. I'm leaning toward the movie being based off of Oedipus Rex because he's sleeping with his daughter, and neither of them know it, but I'm not sure...what do you guys think?

POISON

Hey, I found the story of "The Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Poor Boy in the Grave." It's kind of like what we were talking about in class, about the poison. This poison tricks this boy into thinking it's not even poison when really it results in his death anyway. Check it out if you feel like reading it real quick. It's really not that long. http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/story119.pdf

Question

Hey ya'll so when I was reading the other day I was a little confused as to what exactly Aegeus promised Medea he would do, does anyone know?

mythic warriors: jason and madea

here are a few links to an episode about Jason and Medea...

If anybody thinks the show is weird, its because it's Canadian.

mythic warriors

from what i remember there used to to be a cartoon t.v. show called "Mythic Warriors" and it re-told popular stories of Greek myths, but made for children to watch.
I keep having this reoccurring dream that my mom is having an affair and then marries a new husband...which is ironic because of Madea, except the roles are reversed.
Julian, I'm not sure about Jason sleeping with Kreon's daughter being illegal. But there is probably something illegal about Jason marrying Kreon's daughter while still married to Medea.
Julian, Jason and Medea have two children
Rachel, we have to finish Medea for Monday. I don't know if we are having a quiz though.

Hey Guys!

I wasn't here in class today, what did we go over and if we took notes can someone email them to me please! Thank you!

p.s. do we have homework?
How many children do Jason and Medea have together?

Prostitution in A.G.!

When we read that article the other night, i got really confused with the way the author kept talking about prostitution. It seemed weird to me that in Anchient Greece this taboo, illegal, and frowned upon now, would be so common. According to a very trust worthy site (wikipedia), it was very common to find prostitutes, and it was one of populations biggest economic entities! It came as a surprise that when i expected to find a career that was not that big of a deal, they had cities with well known brothels. This opened my eyes and hopefully this helps explain to you the way women were thought of and how they affected the Greek societies.

for further reading follow the link! lol
Is there a law against Jason sleeping with Kreon's daughter since they are not married?

Question

Does anyone know what Kreon thinks about Jason possibly marrying one of his daughters? and does this give him any royal privileges?

Question!

Would Medea have been able to remarry after she divorced Jason? I wasn't sure what the answer to that one was.

Divorce

I am confused, is Medea divorcing Jason, or is Jason divorcing Medea?

Why does Jason leave Medea? Does he just not love her anymore?

Spartan Women

Just a bit of food for thought between the lifestyles of Spartan women and Athenian counterparts.

Ancient Greece. Women. Aristotle,

I also found a website on the treatment of women in Ancient Greece. It was written and researched by Dr. Deborah Vess. I goggled her to make sure this was a reliable source for information. I found that she is in the Department of History and Geography. She specializes in medieval information. She got her degree at Georgia and State University. This website has a lot of information on women in Ancient Greece, in addition to information on Aristotle's point of view, which is a topic we have covered in class.

This is a really cool website by the students of the Virginia Community College. They are asked to state their opinions on such topics as "Is Oedipus a Free Man or a Fool of the Gods?" It is really interesting to read all of the different opinions.

Shelley's Post

Shelley, we read some of our essays that we wrote. Then we just went over some ID's and stuff like Merope, Polybus, Three Roads, the Sphinx, Corinth, Delphi, Apollo, Teiresias and also the plot of the play to prepare for the test.

Sphinx

Robert, the sphinx just gave Oedipus a riddle and he had to solve it in order to save Thebes. He solved it easily and then tricked the Sphinx and it killed itself. That's really all we have to know about it.

If you're looking for another interpretation on the story, there is a very interesting movie on it which was made in 1967. It incorporates both western and eastern culture and it is a really cool version of the story. It is a foreign film but still very interesting!

oedipus complex

There is also a story called "My Oedipus Complex", and its about a boy who loves his mother. I had to read it a few year ago and I now know where the title comes from. Just thought that was interesting!
I like the comics seth...and I think I saw the same thing on the history channel.
We had an example of the Oedipal Complex last year in English with the rocking horse winner (title is a little off) by D. H. Lawrence.

Oedipus Comics -

Comic One! - kinda funny!

Comic Two: - Funny!

Oedipus Complex

The other day i was watching the television and on the history channel they had a special on Ancient Greece and mentioned something about an "Oedipus complex." I did not completely understand what they were talking about so I researched it and this is the simplest definition that i came up with....

" The Oedipus Complex - Dr. Sigmund Freud named this condition after one of the key meanings in the play. In Oedipus, the main character (Oedipus himself) kills his father and marries his mother. The meaning of the Oedipus complex is a boy's natural sexual feelings for his own mother. This is shown at birth and in normal human behavior, is broken up after years of aging. "

ps. Ms. D said she was gonna make us write an essay on it next week!

Ouroboros

We've kind of talked about this in class, so I wanted to touch up on the subject. Ouroboros is the word for "a snake biting its own tail". It's Greek for "tail-eater". The Greeks really liked the idea of Eternal Recurrence. Eternal Recurrence is like the idea of "you never walk through the same river twice," everything goes in cycles. Ouroboros symbolizes this ideology. Plato believed that the first living thing in the universe was a self-eating immortal, perfectly constructed. However, it was not Plato who invented this concept.
The Ouroboros has appeared in many cultures. Artifacts containing a coiled serpent were found China that date from thousands of years before Plato was even born. Even the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl has been portrayed as an ouroboros. The Egyptians were also interested in this idea of the world ebbing and flowing, and they are most likely the cause of it being integrated into Greek philosophy. However, once Christianity began to flourish, this idea dwindled.

Later, alchemists began to use the Ouroboros. However, for them it symbolized the ultimate goal of all alchemists; the Philosopher's Stone. The Philosopher's Stone is a fabled material that is said to be able to turn basic metals into gold and also create the Elixir of Life. The Elixir, of course, would provide immortality. Therefore, Ouroboros, an infinite cycle, is appropriate as a symbol for immortality. Once the alchemists died off, and the Elixir of Life was no longer being searched for, Ouroboros decreased in popularity, only showing up occasionally on Masonic structures and such.

However, during the late 19th Century, German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche revitalized the idea of eternal recurrence, and wrote many books which contained at least some mention of the idea. To Nietzsche, who was a staunch atheist, eternal recurrence was not controlled by an entity. Rather, he believed that time was cyclical, and that the world was somewhat like a sieve in that there would be people who were workers, people who were leaders, and people who were artists, etc. And he believed that eternal recurrence had more to do with what people would become, in that there will always be artists and patrons to support the artists. This gave the world balance to Nietzsche.

Nietzsche lived around the same time as the psychologist Sigmund Freud, and, if not directly, Nietzsche indirectly influenced the psychologist. After Freud came Jung, who was very interested in Nietzsche's ideas. Jung also became interested in the symbol of ouroboros. He wrote seminars interpreting Nietzsche's eternal recurrence as well as the ouroboros. To Jung, the ouroboros meant not just infinity, but also unity. The head and tail meet; opposites attract, and from the clashing of opposites comes One.

Since then, ouroboros have been used in many forms of media. For instance, many musicians have used it as names for songs/albums, and even Neil Peart, the drummer of the band Rush, uses the ouroboros symbol on his drum kit. It has been used in plenty of books, such as Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, and has even appeared in video games.

WALL OF TEXT OVER. Just some food for thought. I spent a long time on this, I better get comments.

Also, here are a few pictures of ouroboros.

Nationals baseball contender lied about his age

Esmailyn Gonzalez, a major candidate for the Washington Nationals baseball team, was the recipient of an international signing bonus, which amounted to the largest in team history. However, the supposed 19-year-old, Gonzalez, is actually a 23-year-old, by the name of Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo.

Gonzalez, a shortstop from the Dominican Republic, was given a $1.4 million signing bonus, which was signed on July 2, 2006, and his membership on the team was boasted, as the Nationals display of commitment to acquiring top-notch players. However, his contract was immediately met with suspicion from insiders of the sport, who claimed that the team’s description of Gonzalez as a “five-tool” player was not accurate. One individual, informed of the scandal, commented on Gonzalez’s stats, saying “Those are great numbers, but you should be hitting that well if you're that much older than your competition." The rather large size of Gonzalez’s bonus, coupled with his close relations with the team manager drew the suspicions of the FBI and the Major League, prompting an investigation into his affairs.

This event has caused much anger among fellow Dominicans, as they feel betrayed after having cheered for Gonzalez for a while.

As of now, it is uncertain if there actually is an Esmailyn Gonzalez, or how the documents were falsified. Meanwhile, Gonzalez remains in the Dominican Republic, unsure of his career’s future.

Dominican Baseball Players

A Breeding Ground for Superstars:
July 9, 2009 marks the day that the dominant Dominican baseball player, David Ortiz, hits the 300th homerun of his career. After a slow start to his season, “Big Papi” scored seven home runs in June, his lucky number three hundred a month latter. Ortiz’s dominance in his field has no doubt brought pride and joy in the faces of his countrymen in the U.S.A. as well as the Dominican Republic.
In this day and age Dominican baseball players are taking the sport by storm. The country has the second highest amount of players after the United States. Today the Dominican seems to be a breeding ground for the sport’s superstars. Reporter Peter Cary says the following in a recent internet post, “Sammy Sosa. Albert Pujols. Pedro Martinez. Juan Marichal. Felipe Alou. The names of the great players that the Dominican Republic has supplied to Major League Baseball just roll, with a trill, off the tongue.” Exactly how the Central American country accumulates such elite athletes is both saddening and heartwarming. The answer is simple, practice. In a country stricken by poverty, there is no TV. There are no material distractions. Children instead grow to love beisbol, playing two to three hours a day, during breaks and after dinner. The game played in the Dominican is one filled with fun and joy. Tension that arises from hard-headed coaches and parents pushing their players seems to be non-existent in the country. Because of this, Dominican players tend to be some of the more relaxed in the league. All countries take notice. The Dominican Republic teaches us that it is practice that makes perfect.
