Alrighty, so I'm not trying to ask a dumb question, I'm just wondering. What exactly is it about Othello,( since he is the only black character) that makes him so powerful in the play? I don't understand where he comes from and how he demands such respect... a wealthy family.. some different background.. what?

I'm not positive, but I feel like Shakespeare wanted Othello to come off as a very charismatic character, someone that is very kind and everyone likes. His position and honesty make others believe him very easily. This makes the ending all the more tragic...I think.

he is a general with many feats of glory and such, which is how he was able to "win" desdemona to his liking. people mostly looked up to him, as he was a higher rank then them in the army
