Jeff Jordan: A Modern Surrealist Artist

When most people think of Surrealism, they think of Dali and Magritte, but there are plenty of examples of present day surrealist painters. One of my favorites is Jeff Jordan.

This painting is called Big Mutant:


Part of the purpose of surrealism is to parody reality. Above is a picture of one of his paintings. Obviously, it's very strange and interesting, and doesn't make much sense. Try to interpret the picture above, and think about what it could mean. Think about how much your interpretation changes when I give you this picture:



So, then, what does the Big Mutant represent? War? Peace? God? This is part of the reason why Surrealism is so great, there's not one correct answer. Some may be better and deeper than others, sure, but it's all subjective.
