Victim or Villain?

Do you beleive Medea is a victim or a villain? She does kill her husband and children, but do you think she knew what she was doing? After all, Aphrodite casted a spell on her to make her fall madly in love with Jason. She is basically possessed by her love for him. Do you think she is to blame for her actions? Or is she a victim?

Today, if she were on trial for the murder of her family, the jury wouldn't care that she killed out of love, but would her argument have had validity back then when people believed in witchcraft?

I think that in this particular instance Medea is a victim. She is cursed by the gods which is why she does all these terrible things. In any other setting I believe Medea would be a villian.

i think madea is a victim because of her jealousy ways she has towards Jason because of the gods. she murders and commits sin which is one of the worst things you can do in your lifetime during that time.

i think medea was a victim because Aphrodite made Medea fall in love with Jason so that she would help him. The only thing she could really think about was how much she loved Jason and how hurt she was by him when he left her for the princess

Victim. Jason probably made Medea go a little crazy by leaving her and all. She does show symptoms of crazy.

I think Medea was a victim. Now would a jury agree with me? That i dont know. But she was so deeply in love with jason she couldnt act out of reason.

i think that medea really loses her mind which would make her a villain, however, she becomes a villain because of Jason's neglect. I think that although the Gods did make her what she is, she still commits all the crimes.

If medea was on trial today ,she definately would be found guilty , however this is simular to the oedipus story and how in anceint greece, they probably wouldnt have found him guilty because he couldnt fight his fate, medea was placed under a spell in which she could not escape its outcome.

I think that if she was on trail right now she would definately go to prison. I think that regardless of how much she loved Jason, she killed out of jealousy and threw her kids into the middle of everything and then had to kill them so I think she was a villain.

I'd have to say while I do think that Medea is the villain of the story, she is a sympathetic villain. She is a very tragic figure, as she loses most of her family and the respect of her kingdoms over her love for Jason. Though she is not entirely at fault for the murders she commits, she stills murders her own children and close relatives and wreaks general havoc throughout the story, so she plays a villain's role in the story.

i think its hard to judge someone when you havent been put in the situation before.

This is an interesting question because of the threat the Gods posed to the people in ancient times. I think that they would look down upon her as a demon type figure. If Medea knew about the curse casts on her and told other about it, i think the people would have to believe her. If they didnt it could be looked upon as hubris, underminning the work of a God, which is very dangerous.

i think she's a victim. i can't see a woman in her right mind killing her kids, no matter what the reason. killing jason's other wife maybe...
