"Crown of Thorns"

At the end of this chapter, Gordie hits a deer and later thinks its June that he has killed. But June has already died and we know that its just a deer because Sister Mary Martin goes to the car expecting to find a dead woman and finds a dead deer. So is it just Gordie's drunken state that makes him think he killed June or does he think he killed June in the sense that he did something to make her leave and she got killed on the road?? What do ya'll think??

He definitely had too much to drink. Remember, he hallucinated at the beginning of the chapter and thought he saw June's ghost at the window

I think its a bit of both. He may be feeling guilt for what he thus he hallucinated that the deer was June. I think Emily's idea is probable and pretty accurate

yea i think it may be both as well, because he hurt June and he knew June died on the road he feels that the deer is June. Maybe while he was driving he saw June instead of the deer and once he got out the car to check it was the deer.

I think he has gone into some sort of traumatic shock when he finds out that June is dead. From the beginning of the chapter, he's already going in and out of reality and memories, and he is very spiritual with his "if you call the dead by the name that they will answer" belief. I think he is not mentally stable when he hits the dear, and is partially blaming himself for June's death that he hallucinates June as the deer.
