Question about the Fighting Whities from the quiz.

Consider this quote, “Because the majority typically has more power – political, economic, social – than minorities, its members are not so likely to feel diminished by words of contempt.” Now discuss why much of the debate over the moniker “Fighting Whities” oversimplified the issues surrounding teams with Native American mascots.

If I asked you to post your answer, please put it up as a comment.

Because the majority of white people were not offended by the name "The Fighting Whities," they tried to convice Native Americans that names like "Redskins" and "Warriors" were not offensive because whites were not disrespected about "The Fighting Whities." The white majority understood the parody of "The Fighting Reds" and the satire of it and they tried to make the Native Americans see the satire of other mascots hence oversimplifying and overlooking the history and traditions of the Native Americans.

Ben is right, but i think in todays world way to many people are over sensitive when it comes to racial issues i think some people use this topic to help get other irrelevant things off their chests.

in laurie's comment below she uses the quote that shows someone taking offense to the name "Washigton Redskins" this shows an over sensitivity to things that may not be the real issue and the mascot names are used more as a way of expressing anger even if its not the actual cause of it

the fact that the name is changed to try and cover up a racial issue is wrong. they're trying to solve this issue by trying to make it an equal point, but it really is making the situation worse.

good point emily. i agree but they have to do something to show some attempt at "equality."

i think white people were not as affected by the name because it doesnt have as negative a connotation to white people as redskins does to indian people because they are a minority and feel disrespected when they are called that and tried to make white people feel the same way by creating the mascot 'fighting whites' but it didnt really upset most white people.
