i think that stereotyping isnt a good thing for indians to do. even though it is easy to stereotype groups of people, its not something that is healthy for a race.
I think its a combination of both.
The indians do not like it when other people stereotype them so the indians should not stereotype themselves because i think it makes it easier for other people such at the whites to stereotype the indians.
while i do not think that native americans should sterotype themselves and then get offended when others do the same, i think that they do this as part of a shell to defend themselves from the pain they feel from these sterotypes. by laughing at themselves, they make it seem as if it does not offend them as much when people do the sterotypical indian traits.
Its definitly a combination of both. They know best about themselves.
black people stereotype themselves all the time..evey race does it to themselves because sometimes they see funny stuff in their own race..check out DAve Chapelle and Russll Peters
I agree with taylor and sophie, i think that if they are going to stereotype themselves they shouldn't be offended when someone else steryotypes them. I also think that they understand themselves too.
i don't understand why this book seems to reaffirm all the stereotypes that are placed on indians. it seems to me like the author should try to put them down
admiting these stereotypes is not good for the indians becuse it allows for others to sterotype them
I don't think that the novel is racist in its reflections on Indian stereotypes. It just portrays Indians on reservations as aware of the many stereotypes applied to them. There's a difference between Indians on a reservation joking about the many stereotypes used by white people and whites using stereotypes as insults.
i agree with devin. as long as the Indians are the ones stereotypign themselves then i think it is okay because they are making fun of themselves.
I think there is a fine line between stereotyping and being true to your culture
i think that they do this to defend themselves from the agony that they feel from like other groups of people. they just sit back and laugh at themselves to cover up their sadness when people make fun o fthem.

i dont think it is racist aganist indians since it is an indian who is writing it, i think he is just relating indian traditions with normal day to day activities
I think it's more thought provoking reguarding racism against Indians. I also think Indians can do whatever they want with their culture. After all, it is theirs.
there are alot of negative stereotypes that this book portrays of indians. one of them is about how they're all alcoholics. idk if its true or not but it's still a negative thing that this book focuses alot on
