Crossdressing
Clearly, Shakespeare's audience thought crossdressing was uproariously funny, and today we still think that's so. "White Chicks," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Bachelor Party," and "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" show that Americans love movies with gender-bending themes. Why do you think crossdressing is viewed as so comedic? Why do you think crossdressing is mainly acceptable in mainstream movies, but homosexuality remains controversial and often incendiary? I don't know why we like crossdressing so much. I think it's funny if it's done in a way that pokes fun at the opposite sex. Zach and Wade's outfits for Vegas day were hilarious because they portrayed femininity to the extreme. If a guy just put on lipstick, it wouldn't be funny. But if they wear a dress and fake breasts, it becomes hilarious. If you go all out with the crossdressing, it's funny, but anything else only gets a giggle.
in movies people know that crossdessing is a joke but when it is in real life people do not accept it because it is reality unlike a movie.
i think crossdressing is accepted more than homosexuality bc its just a big joke with clothes and makeup, whereas homosexuality is harder for some people to understand.
i think crossdressing is looked at as a joke in movies, but in real life it actually has a meaning to the person, so people are less hesitant to judge that person

i think its done in a humorous manner...by the way i think the whole typing the words and finding the quote is really helpful
When most people see an actor like Robin Williams crossdressing in a movie, they don't see it as some weird guy in women's clothings, they just see it as a familiar actor playing a part.
Also, people tend to accept homosexuals in movies if the homosexuals are portrayed by familiar actors, like Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote.
Most moviegoers treat movies as an escape from reality, hence their willingness to accept things that would seem out of the ordinary in real life.
i agree with g. and mrs. doubtfire was a heart warming movie..it made me cry...............................
cross dressing XTREME is much for hilarity but for woman to dress a little butch and manly is fine and for a man to dress like a woman it is fine..what makes a great shakespeare is extreme/exaggerated cross dressing. i really dont know what i am saying
i think pepole find cross dressing so funny because no one really would expect a man to dress like a woman or a woman to dress like a man. but i think people know its a joke more in movies, unlike in reality when people find it disturbing
I think that society thinks cross dressing is so funny because it is a way to poke fun at the opposite sex and also to see people, who are quite often very masculin or feminin, as something that they are oviously are not. I think that society is able to find this as funny because the person is not fully becoming the opposite sex, they are just playing that role for a time. Homosexuality, on the other hand, offends many people who are rigid because it bends the "normal" view that they have.
Cross dressing is always funny to me but i dont know why really. in movies like the birdcage, it plays a serious role in helping the senator escape, but it cant be taken seriously because of how their all dressed.
I think people find cross dressing funny because it is almost like an outlet for their discomfort with homosexuality (if they are the type of person that is not ok with it in real life), and they like that they can laugh at it and not be looked down upon for being homophobic.
cross dressing is seen as funny because an audience who sees it knows the truth to what is behind that person who is cross dressing, but when dealing with homosexuality in real life people fear it and dont find it funny because they are unsure of what to think
I think that some people may view crossdressing as being funny because men should be men and women should be women. However it is always more funny to see a "manly" man dress up as a woman. But back then, like Shakespear's time, people were used to it because only men were allowed to act at first!
i don't find crossdressing as funny as it's made out to be. yes, it has some comic relief because impersonating others is funny, but i think that society makes it out to be more then it is.
i think whats funny about it is that in some movies you see a really masculine character totally reverse roles and act like a women, this reversal of sex is what appeals to the audience so much
i think that cross-dressing is fun beccause you can pretend to be something you aren't. some people believe that all people are not made equal and are uncomfortable around people who are different from them. It's interesting when people who can laugh at cross-dressing comedy can't seem to accept someone whose life is actually like that.
