Motifs and Symbols

When you discover images, motifs, themes and symbols that Alexie uses repeatedly, post them here with the quotes in which they appear. Also reference page numbers. Once you've found some symbols, motifs, themes, etc, comment on them.

one motif i noticed was the repititive use of the word "Drums" on its own line (page 88). i think this is a symbol for victors heart beat.

Mirrors!

the motif of baseball and how the baseball cards relate to dreams is somewhat of a recurring motif in the story.

the warrior motif, alexie uses it a lot to describe the indians warlike past and maybe commmentary on the indian condition, in that they have always had to fight to survive spiritual and in the real world

Horse motif is used alot, horses played a powerful roll in native american culture. the horse represents freedom from today like in a drug called tradition, victor's stolen horse is named Flight and Crazy Horse being such a prophet like figure.
