DON'T FORGET!
You have a paper due on the Monday when you return to school (Dec. 1). The assignment is on the HW site. You will write your own circle of Hell adhearing to the requirements set out in the assignment. Matt asked, "How long does it have to be?" The answer is, "long enough." 4 pages MINIMUM, but I've found over the years that the most successful essays are longer - 5-6 pages. Remember this is your opportunity to be creative, so use description, metaphor, simile - and HAVE FUN with your creation (Dante certainly did).

Inferno Paper
This is a creative paper. You must design your own circle of Hell mimicking Dante’s style.
Requirements:
1. Write in first person, past tense
2. a guide
3. a monster guarding your circle
4. your mode of transportation in and out of this layer of Hell
5. a certain, well-defined “sin” to be punished
6. a punishment for that sin that is in some way symbolically appropriate—
a. Describe it
b. The symbolic nature of the punishment should be discussed by your “hero” and his/her guide
7. description of the landscape
8. damned souls from the local and world community of the early 2000’s late 1900’s
9. Your “hero” (yourself) will approach at least one soul and have a conversation
10. You must include some characteristics of an EPIC in addition to simply having a hero on a quest (look up epic if you need to)
11. visual imagery and similes in Dante’s style (at least 1 epic simile)
12. symbolic characters/landscapes/retribution – your story must in some way be allegoric
13. your true or fictional theology
14. Portray the relationship between yourself and your guide
Optional:
1. written in terza rima
2. footnotes
Your grade will be based on how well and to what extent you fulfill the requirements above. Have fun, be creative and remember – this is a Comedy!!! (Divine, but still a Comedy.)
do u want us to write about actual peopple in our lives we think are a model of one of our layers of hell or make up names?
Well, its best if you don't libel people in your paper - like adultry isn't something I need to hear about - get me? But if someone you know is super loud, and the circle is for the loud, then put them there. Don't make up people. Don't forget to put historical people in the circle as well.
instead of putting histoical people can we put friends and stuff like that since it has to be funny. Or do you want us to do both?

Emily, my exact question. I feel like you and I always do that. We are both always asking how to turn in our papers.
OK - so print them out to hand in. My actual plan is to have you trade papers tomorrow and do a little peer editing. Everyone is usually so proud of their work that they want to share their cleverness with the whole class.
