So if Virgil is supposed to belong in the virtuous pagans area (circle one), why does he have powers that can silence Pultus, Minos, Cerebrus and all those other monsters that reign the circles? Is it because God willed it or something????
Thats a good question, Elz. My guess would be because if Virgil didn't have those supposed "super powers," he and Dante couldn't get through Hell. Virgil is also a special case because he can leave his circle of Hell and guide Dante through the other eight. But why? All that trouble just so the reader can learn how Dante envisions Hell?
Look back at Canto II. Virgil is sent by God at the behest of Mary, who is in turn asked by Rachel, Lucia, and Beatrice to intervene on Dante's behalf and save him.
Yes, Virgil will take Dante through Hell, but no further because he's a denizen of Hell so can't leave. Dante has a different guide to take him through Purgatory and Heaven. Virgil has no hope, so must return to Circle 1.
Okay, so I get how Virgil is allowed to traverse through Hell as tour guide for Dante. But I dont understand how God plays into all of this. Do Satan and God have some kind of understanding or previous arrangement so that God can intervene and send in His messengers, such as in Circle 6? Is Satan under God's command?

He's OK because he's in Circle 1. He lived a virtuous life, and Dante admired him; he's the perfect choice for a guide.
Well its not like he is an angel right? he belongs in Circle 1.
But who better to show Dante the world than his "idol"? Maybe God allowed him to leave Circle 1 to give Dante a tour

he has to be sent by God because he knows that a messenger from heaven is going to come and allow them into circle 6 i think.
so once the trip is over he is going to be sent back to circle one?
