i think lana is trying to find a replacement for dean dying and that's why she takes in so many things and they think edgar is the new prodigal son bc he's survived so many things
as 12th grade english scholars, made we read too much into it. it is possible that edgar is a replacement son because his survival, but does Brain know what he's saying? i mean he's smart but for a seven year old can he really read that much into his family matters?

Think about the fact that Brain is 7 as was Edgar when we met him. How can you compare Brain and Edgar? Which is a more "realistic" 7 year old?

I don't think that Dean is meant to threaten Edgar's status as a miracle child. I agree with stephanie that maybe we're reading too much into it.
