I think that throughout the story, Edgar has been influenced by many of the male characters that he has come across, such as Barry, Art, and Clay. However, he does make some of is own decisions!
He deifnately makes his own decisions. He kills Barry. He puts finding the mailman over all his other priorities. He also leaves the Madsens' when things get hazy.
I think with the guidance of others like barry and nelson and cecile, he makes his own decisions. As the novel progresses, we see him mature and continue to make decisions for himself.
i think that edgar controls himself because he is forced to fin for himself at an early age, so i think he's responsible enough to handle things on his own
